"Should I be on Google or Facebook?"
I hear this question at least three times a week. And the honest answer is: it depends on your business type, your customer's buying behavior, and what you're actually trying to accomplish.
Here's the breakdown I give to every new client, based on managing 79 active accounts and over $2M in annual ad spend across both platforms.
The Fundamental Difference
Google Ads captures people who are actively searching for what you offer. They have intent. They want something right now.
Facebook Ads interrupts people who are scrolling through their feed. They might want what you offer — but they weren't looking for it.
Google Ads: When It Works Best
Google Ads dominates when your customer has a specific need and searches for it:
- "Emergency plumber near me" — They need you NOW
- "Best orthodontist in Scottsdale" — They're actively comparing
- "Roof repair estimate" — Ready to buy, comparing providers
Best business types for Google Ads: Service businesses (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, legal), medical and dental practices, B2B professional services, any business where the customer knows what they need.
Typical results: Cost per lead $15-$75 depending on industry. Revenue returned for every dollar spent: 4-8x for well-managed campaigns. Results in 2-4 weeks.
Facebook Ads: When It Works Best
Facebook Ads shine when you need to create demand rather than capture it:
- A new restaurant nobody has heard of yet
- A medspa launching a new treatment
- A real estate agent promoting open houses
Best business types for Facebook Ads: Restaurants and food/beverage, beauty/wellness/aesthetics, retail and e-commerce, events and entertainment.
Typical results: Cost per lead $5-$40 depending on offer strength. Revenue returned for every dollar spent: 2-5x. Faster initial traction in 1-3 weeks.
The Honest Comparison by Business Type
Restaurants: Start with Facebook. Visual content performs well, special offers drive immediate action. Add Google once you have review volume.
Medical/Dental Practices: Start with Google. Patients actively search for providers. The intent is higher and conversion rate dramatically better.
Home Services (Plumber, HVAC, etc.): Google first, always. Nobody scrolls Facebook hoping to find a plumber.
Medspas and Aesthetics: Both, but lean Facebook. Aesthetic treatments are visual, aspirational, and emotion-driven.

Professional Services (Lawyers, Accountants): Google dominates. People search for professionals when they need them.
The Third Option: Geofencing
For local businesses stuck choosing between Google and Facebook: consider geofencing as a third option for location-based targeting.
Geofencing targets people based on where they physically go. A restaurant that geofences nearby hotels. A medspa that geofences competitor locations. An orthodontist that geofences local schools during registration.
What I'd Do With a $3,000/Month Budget
- 60% on Google Ads ($1,800) — capture the people already looking for you
- 25% on Facebook/Instagram ($750) — build awareness and retarget website visitors
- 15% on Geofencing ($450) — target competitor locations and high-traffic areas
Then optimize based on data. The right answer isn't ideological. It's mathematical.
